20 minute talk & 20 minutes for questions

Dementia is not simple, not for anyone. For the person whose mind is no longer remembering, it is disorienting and scary and shame can easily find a hold. For the loved ones who are witnessing it, it is often tragic and heart wrenching. But we can also see it as an opportunity for an act of big love by accepting who a person is in the present moment. Then we can concentrate our efforts on an adapted environment that gives the external support for that which can no longer be held internally, in the mind. The sensitive period of Order and need for stability in all that surrounds the person with dementia comes back around. In fact, many aspects of the mind suffering from dementia are a return to the simplicity of the mind in early life. The first mental capacities to be developed are the last ones to be lost.
